Join us on a Bike Tour to Gabriola Island

Thursday, October 29th, 2015

Join us on an overnight bike tour to Gabriola Island! We will depart Vancouver the morning of Saturday November 7 and return Sunday afternoon.

Gabriola is a Northern Gulf Island accessible by ferry from Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. We will camp at Descanso Bay Regional Park.

Departing from Vancouver (meeting location tba), we will bike to Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal via Marine Drive and take the ferry to Vancouver Island. In Nanaimo we will bike a short distance to the Gabriola ferry. The campsite is just a 5 minute ride from the ferry terminal.

This ride is beginner friendly; no bike touring experience required to participate! However, you will require a sturdy bike and your own camping gear. We rent panniers for $5/day at the Bike Kitchen.

Let us know you’re attending on facebook.

Intro to Mechanics November Session

Thursday, October 15th, 2015

Intro to Mechanics is a 4-session workshop series that runs on Thursdays from 6:30-8:30 pm at the Bike Kitchen.

During these interactive sessions, you’ll learn to become more familiar with different types of bike tools and different parts of bikes. Simple repairs and maintenance will be taught by knowledgeable mechanics in a friendly and supportive environment. Throughout this series of workshops, demonstrations and explanations of basic bike mechanisms will be given to help with understanding of the entire bicycle system.

The workshop schedule for November is:

November 5th – Introduction to the Bicycle, Flats and Tires
November 12th – Bearings: A bearing is the point of contact between a turning part and a non-turning part. Major bearings on a bicycle are the headset, the bottom bracket, and the hubs. There are also bearings in brakes, pedals and freewheels.
November 19th – Brakes and Truing
November 26th – Drivetrain:  This includes the parts of a bicycle which have to do with generating forward motion, including the pedals, cranks, chainwheels, bottom bracket, chain, derailleurs, rear sprocket(s) and rear hub.

Cranksgiving bike news

This fun bike race will raise money and donations for the AMS Food Bank. The event will take place on Thursday, October 29. Registration is at 4 pm with the race commencing at 4:30 pm.

Starting from The Bike Kitchen and taking place (mostly) on campus, there will be two simultaneous races:

-a less competitive, and shorter “alley kitty” bike race for everyone else!

Entry fee: a non-perishable food or cash donation for the food bank.

Please bring cash/some payment form since at least one of the checkpoints will be at a grocery store where you will be required to purchase a food item.

No experience necessary, you just need a bike!
