About the Programs Supported

All proceeds from the event will be used to fund two important programs: Bici Libre, and Pedals for the People. Both programs provide bikes, bike accessories and mechanical assistance to people who cannot afford them, taking donated bikes otherwise destined for the trash and refurbishing them with the help of volunteers.

  • Bici Libre provides these services to seasonal agricultural workers in the Fraser Valley who have little or no access to autonomous mobility to get groceries, access medical services, or otherwise leave the farm.
  • Pedals for the People serves the Downtown Eastside community by providing bicycles to those who are socially marginalized based on immigration status, poverty, substance use or mental health concerns.

Funds from this event will go towards these programs, especially these necessary program costs:

  1. Transportation of bicycles: needed to distribute bicycles throughout the Fraser Valley.
  2. Purchasing of basic bicycle accessories: helmets, bells and lights are needed as without them, people will not be visible at night, and may be fined beyond their financial means for not complying with cycling laws.  Without an adequate lock, people may have their bikes stolen.

The programs are coordinated by two community bike shops, the AMS Bike Co-op/Bike Kitchen and PEDAL. Both shops teach people how to build and ride bikes, and run programming for folks who might not otherwise have access to bicycles or bicycle repair.
